If you're looking for a Christmas present for a photographer, go get either "Saul Leiter: Early Color" or "Fred Herzog: Vancouver Photographs". In fact, get 'em both; they compliment each other perfectly. And they're great antidotes to the current digital madness. "Oh, I couldn't possibly shoot with a camera at anything less than ISO 800!", "Oh, noise - I hate it!", "No zoom?!? How could I possibly take photographs (sorry "capture images" - gees)?"
These guys worked with films with ISOs around 25, with single focal length lenses, and.....were fuckin' brilliant. And they didn't "capture" anything. They took photographs.
Just stumbled across your blog--after first finding and then getting totally confused by that wordpress.com site. Argh, another sign of aging!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, just wanted to say that I am enjoying your imagery. Also finding it interesting how your palette is so much brighter than mine, or Carl Weese's, although we are all drawn to the same subjects with a similar approach.
Can't be the light, since you are only about 200 kilometers north of me.

Thanks, Tyler. I just found your blog and, you're right, we do see similar things in a similar way. Which means, of course, that I like your photos, too. (Even if your colour palette is subtler than mine. : ) )
